The yellow water lily is a common plant in standing or slow-moving water, growing in ponds, lakes, canals and ditches. It has large, lily-like leaves, up to 40 cm in diameter, and grows in water up to 3 m deep the leaves and flowers float on the surface, while the rest of the plant is submerged, growing from the silt at the bottom. It flowers in summer, from June to September, and has a wine-like scent, which is why it is also known by other common names, such as "brandy bottle". Water lilies are excellent plants to add to a wildlife pond, as they provide shelter for frogs and early nectar for insects.
