Monastir is a port city in the central part of the eastern coast of Tunisia, located about 15 km south of Sousse. The history of Monastir dates back to Phoenician and Roman times. The city experienced its golden age in the Middle Ages, during the reign of the Aghlabid dynasty. The name of the city comes from a Christian monastery.
