| Tank Hill in the Inner Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco, at just under three acres is one of those very little neighborhood parks that even a lot of San Franciscans do not know about. Sitting just below the much better known and bigger Twin Peaks, at 64 acres, it does have the advantage of being a lot quieter and less crowded. Tank Hill gets its name from the 350,000 gallon water tank that was built up there, in 1894, to provide drinking water to the already growing city population. The tank was removed in 1957, leaving only the concrete base and anchor bolts, plus some spectacular city views 650 feet below. The hill itself is made from a red rock called Franciscan Chert, found throughout California. |
