| Differing in its shape from all the others, in terms of having the shape of an irregular hexagon, the Talavskaya tower was built in the second half of the XIV century. It was erected on the site where the gates of the Talavsky Zhab were previously located. Both the Zhab and the tower supposedly got their name from the Tolova tribe, the Talaba tribe of Latgalian origin, who once inhabited these lands and later disappeared among the local population.
The tower had five stone battle tiers and was crowned with a wooden arrow, its diameter is 9.3 meters, the thickness of the walls is 1.8 meters.
The peculiarity of the tower is the slot-like loopholes arranged in a fan-like manner, expanding inward. This shape and location of the loopholes made it possible to minimize the dead space when firing cannons. |
