Leucojum vernum is an early-flowering perennial bulb native to central and southern Europe, thriving in moist, nutrient-rich deciduous woodlands, riparian zones, and damp meadows. It typically blooms from late winter to early spring, often emerging through melting snow. Plants reach 15â25 cm in height and bear one to three nodding, bell-shaped white flowers, each marked with a small green or yellow spot on the tepal tips. The leaves are narrow, glossy, and strap-like. L. vernum prefers partial shade, consistently moist soils, and cooler microclimates. It naturalizes readily in suitable habitats and is valued ornamentally for its delicate appearance, early nectar for pollinators, and resilience to cold. Subspecies (e.g., spp. carpathicum) differ slightly in tepal coloration and flowering phenology.
