Split Rock Lighthouse-- the iconic view of one of the best known lighthouses on the North Shore of Lake Superior. The lighthouse is seen from a distance on a clear, sunny summer day, perched on a bluff high above the lake, against a cloudless blue sky. The lake is calm; no waves disturb the reflections of the bluff and the hugegray-pink granite boulders on the shoreline. Glossy, dark green foliage of the trees in the woods below the lighthouse serve as a foil for the brilliant blue sky, the orange and black of the lighthouse, and the orange lichens on the rocks. The historic lighthouse was built to warn ships in the iron, lumber, and grain trades of the treacherous rocky coast. The lighthouse, outbuildings, and grounds are preserved and maintained by the Minnesota Historical Society.
