The green band of the riparian area of the San Pedro River 15 miles away is visible in the center of the photo. Three different ecosystems of the Catalina Mountains are combined in this photo: pines at higher altitudes, then scrub bushes, finally the Sonoran desert in the valley. The Galiuro Mountain Range 25 miles away on the other side of the valley consist mainly of volcanic rock. The little mountain in the Galiuro Range 1/3 from the right is called Bassett Peak 7663 feet/2335 m. The far-away mountain range in the center are the Pinaleño Mountains with their highest peak Mt. Graham at 10,720 feet 3,267 m in the center. The Santa Catalina Mountains near Tucson belong to the group of Madrean Sky Islands.
