| Silvery-cheeked Hornbill (Bycanistes brevis) is a striking bird native to eastern Africa, easily recognized by its large curved bill topped with a prominent casque and the distinctive silvery-grey feathers on its cheeks. It inhabits mountain and coastal forests from Ethiopia and Kenya to Tanzania and Mozambique. This hornbill feeds mainly on fruits, especially figs, but also consumes insects and small animals, playing an important role in seed dispersal and forest regeneration. During breeding, the female seals herself inside a tree cavity nest, relying on the male to bring food. Known for its loud, echoing calls and impressive size, the Silvery-cheeked Hornbill is a symbol of healthy African forest ecosystems. |
