Kathmandu, also spelled Katmandu or Kantipur, is the capital and most populous city of Nepal. It lies in a hilly region near the confluence of the Baghmati and Vishnumati rivers and is surrounded by the Himalayan mountains. The metropolitan area is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world. The valley was historically called the Nepal Mandala and has been the home of the Newar people. It has a multi-ethnic population within a Hindu and Buddhist majority. Kathmandu is the center of Nepal’s history, art, culture and economy. The city is home to several UNESCO World Heritage sites including the Durbar Square, which is at the heart of the old city’s maze like alleys. Tourism is an integral part of the economy.
