The easily defendable position on the western bank of the Danube River in Budapest was chosen the site of the Royal Palace even from the 13th century. Under the occupation of Hungarian monarchs for 3 centuries, the Ottomans conquered the castle in 1541 and remained under their occupation until the Ottoman army was defeated in a bloody and destructive siege in 1686 by the armies of the Holy Roman Emperor and Archduke of Austria, Leopod von Habsburg. Rebuild several times during history in different architectural styles it was last time rebuild after the Second World War and now houses the Hungarian National Gallery. The image was taken from the interior courtyard of the castle.
