| Rivaled only by the Roman amphitheater in Nîmes, the Arènes (Arena, or Amphitheater) dominates old Arles. It seats over 21,000 spectators and still hosts bullfights in summer. Dating probably from early in the A.D. first century. The amphitheater's four medieval towers are testimony to its transformation from classical sports arena to feudal fortification in the Middle Ages. |
