Heavily-armed riot police face a parking lot filled with onlookers in the aftermath of a Black Lives Matter protest against police brutality in June 2020. Nonviolent protesters associated with Black Lives Matter and Detroit Will Breathe marched several miles northeast of downtown Detroit along Gratiot Avenue before the police violently intervened and effected mass arrests, leaving the scene strewn with trash and the street impassable for hours. The Detroit Police Department receives hundreds of millions of dollars a year in funding and is the best-funded department in the city government by a large margin.
