| Some plants such as coniferous trees. In a wound in the bark of the tree, resin oozes slowly, hardening on exposure to air. Otherwise it can be obtained by making cuts in the bark or wood of the plant.
Certain resins are obtained in a fossilized condition, amber being the most notable example of this class; Copal from Mexico and kauri gum from New Zealand are also obtained in a semi-fossil condition. Resins that are obtained from natural exudates are formed by different acids, called resin acids, which dissolve in alkaline solution forming `resin soaps`, from which resin acids are regenerated by treatment with acids. |
