Purple Swamphen, not to be confused with the Purple Gallinule. While similar in appearance, the Purple Gallinule is native to North America while the Purple Swamphen is an invasive species from Africa. They have been in Florida for about 20 years after a pair of aviculturists allowed their captive swamphens to roam freely allowing a few of the birds to walk away. Since then the naturalized population of the non-native species has increased rapidly. |
