Pictured is the Pozzo dei Cani, an old stone well located in the main square, Piazza Pio II, in front of the Piccolomini Palace in Pienza. Literally translated it is the 'Water Well of the Dogs'. It was designed by Bernardo Rosselino and built in 1462. The well is made of travertine and has a round pedestal with two steps and two columns, one either side of the well's base, that support a large pediment that is decorated with some carvings and friezes. Written on the architrave is PIUS PP II - MCCCCLXII, being Pope Pius II - 1462.
