The railway line called Tren a las Nubes is one of the highest railway routes in the world. During my stay (early 2008), trains on this route did not run for several years, but there were rumors that they were to resume services. One of the highest points on the route is the highest located railway viaduct in the world (according to information in Salta), La Polvorilla (4,220 m above sea level). The line from Salta to Antofagasta (Chile) through the Socompa Pass on the Argentine-Chilean border was built to transport copper and borax. The construction of the La Polvorilla viaduct was completed in 1932.
