The history of the Plaza Mayor in Madrid is the set of historical and urban events that occurred, from the sixteenth century, in this Plaza Mayor in Madrid. The equestrian statue of Philip III in the center of the Plaza Mayor was started by the Italian sculptor Juan de Bologna Giambologna and completed by his disciple Pietro Tacca in 1616. It was a gift from the then Grand Duke of Florence to the king from Spain. Initially it was located in the Casa de Campo.
