Plaza de España Spanish for `Spain Square` is a large square and popular tourist destination located in central Madrid at the western end of the Gran VÃÂa. It features a monument to Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra and is adjacent to two of Madrid`s most prominent skyscrapers. One of them is the Edificio España Spanish for Spain Building, a historic skyscraper, the 8th tallest building in Madrid. It opened in 1953, and is a mixed-use structure containing a hotel, offices, apartments and shops. It is an example of 20th-century Spanish architecture built in the neo-baroque style. The Spanish RIU Hotels chain acquired the building in 2017 and reopened it as Hotel Riu Plaza España in 2019.
