Trieste is a city and seaport in northeastern Italy. It is situated towards the end of a narrow strip of land lying between the Adriatic Sea and Italy's border with Slovenia, which lies almost immediately south and east of the city. Trieste is located at the head of the Gulf of Trieste and throughout history it has been influenced by its location at the crossroads of Germanic, Latin, Austro-Hungarian and Slavic cultures. Piazza Unita d'Italia (Unity of Italy Square in English) is the main town square in Trieste, Italy. It is situated at the foot of the hill containing the castle of San Giusto and the square faces the Adriatic Sea. The square is often said to be Europe's largest square located next to the sea. The square was built during the period when Trieste was the main port of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and includes the city's municipal buildings and other important palaces.
