The Ducal Palace of Mantua, also known as the Gonzaga palace, is one of the main historical buildings of the city.Since 1308 it has been the official residence of the lords of Mantua, the Bonacolsi, and then the main residence of the Gonzaga, lords, marquises and finally dukes of the Virgilian city.It hosted the dominant Gonzaga of the time, his wife, his firstborn legitimate son and the other legitimate children until they came of age as well as important guests.It took the name of Royal Palace during the Austrian domination starting from the time of Maria Theresa of Austria reigning.
