Pictured is a painting of the medina on display inside the Chouara Tannery in Fes, Morocco. Chouara is the largest tannery in Fes and one of the oldest. Historians have been unable to document with certainty when the tannery came into existence but it was probably when the city was founded by Idris II at the beginning of the 9th century. The entire leather production process comprises manual labor only and involves no modern machinery, and has retained methods unchanged since medieval times.
