| Eurasian Wigeon. Mareca penelope. The wigeon prefers marshy shores, fresh water and saltwater lagoons surrounded by trees, open forests during the breeding season, and coastal marshes, bays and other sheltered sea shores during the winter migration. The wigeon is one of the most widespread birds in Eurasia, although there is a wintering population on the east coast of the United States. It is distributed from the Mediterranean north, through Scandinavia, Russia and Siberia, and the Barents Sea. Northern populations migrate to southern Europe and England for the winter. They breed in northern England, especially in the Scottish plains. They swim and fly in large flocks, and are very fast and graceful in flight. |
