The Northern shoveler, Spatula clypeata, looks a lot like most mallards, except for the broader, flatter beak. It is the very shape of the beak that allows them to scoop up and filter their food, aquatic plants and small crustaceans. As seen in Stow Lake, now Blue Heron Lake, in Golden Gate Park 10 March 2022.
