During the occupancy of the Empire of Japan, partial of the walls and gates were demolished and the spaces were transformed into new roads; nearly all of them were flatten in around 1917. Currently in Tainan City, there are only a few city gates preserved containing Duiyue Gate, Dadong Gate, Danan Gate, and Xiaoxi Gate.
