As with any kind of small garden or large city park, water is needed for all the grasses and trees throughout. This gets expensive,so the civic leaders of San Francisco decided to use windmills to pump water for the Golden Gate Park irrigations, instead of having to buy water. The second of the two windmills, along the very Western edge of the park,is Murphy Windmill,on the Southern side. Built between 1905 to 1907,it is said to be the largest of its kind in the world, pumping up to 40,000 gallons (151,416 liters) per hour. This windmill was a gift of Samuel G. Murphy, for who it is named. It is also the location of the Millwrights Cottage, the office, not home of,the people who maintain the windmills. This can get very difficult, since the copper dome on this one was recently returned from The Netherlands from restorations and refurbishing. That one part itself weights 64 tons. As seen 6 April 2023.
