EphesusÃÂ was anÃÂ ancient GreekÃÂ city on the coast ofÃÂ Ionia, three kilometres southwest of present-dayÃÂ SelÃÂ§ukÃÂ inÃÂ ÃÂ°zmir Province,ÃÂ Turkey. It was built in the 10th century BC on the site of the formerÃÂ ArzawanÃÂ capitalÃÂ byÃÂ AtticÃÂ andÃÂ IonianÃÂ Greek colonists. During theÃÂ Classical GreekÃÂ era it was one of the twelve cities of theÃÂ Ionian League. The city flourished after it came under the control of theÃÂ Roman RepublicÃÂ in 129 BC.
