| In 1902 a national competition was called to build a monument to King Alfonso XII, at the initiative of the Queen Regent MarÃÂa Cristina de Habsburgo-Lorena. The winner was the architect José Grases Riera with a grandiose project on one of the larger sides of the Retiro pond, consisting of a colonnade with a large number of sculptures that surrounds the equestrian statue of the king, on one side of the pond, in bronze and marble. |
