Albert LEBRUN was born in 1871. A mining engineer, he began a military career before moving into politics.Elected deputy in 1900 for Meurthe-et-Moselle, he became minister for the first time in 1911. He held several ministerial positions during the Third Republic: Minister of Colonies (1911-1912 and 1913-1914), of War (1913 ) and the Blockade (1917-1919). He was elected senator in 1920 then President of the Republic on May 10, 1932 after the assassination of Paul Doumer. His first mandate was marked by the crisis of February 6, 1934. He ran for a second seven-year term and was re-elected on April 5, 1939. He appointed Philippe Pétain as President of the Council after the resignation of Paul Reynaud. Without resigning, Albert Lebrun leaves power to Pétain and settles in Vizille (Isère) where he is arrested by the Gestapo. He is incarcerated at Itter Castle in the Austrian Tyrol. He did not resume his functions after the Liberation.He died on March 6, 1950 in Paris and was buried in the cemetery of Mercy-le-Haut (54).
