In November the Gentoo penguins return en masse to their roosting and breeding grounds along the Antarctic Peninsula. They will often travel many miles across open and closed sea ice to reach the nesting sites early in the season and follow the trail of those that have arrived before them. Then they wait for the snow to melt and build nests out of the pebbles they find, often stealing pebbles from their neighbours.
