The photo shows a comparison of a man's hand with a print of the front paw of a Brown bear in the mud of a dirt road. The track is relatively small, hence it was probably a young bear. Brown bears (Ursus arctos) are widely distributed in the temperate and boreal regions of the northern hemisphere. The bears from Europe are considerably smaller than their relatives eastern Russia and Alaska. Although the species' trivial name suggests these bears be brown their colors range from grey to brown to almost black. Even in Europe there are viable populations of the European Brown Bear. In Finland they find refuge in the border zone that runs on both sides along the Finnish-Russian border. It is noman's land that can be accessed only by the army: one of the few positive effects millitary presence. Thanks to this refuge zone there are some bearwatching companies near the border where visitor can book a bearwatching experience and film or photograph those magnificent animal. Photographed in late August in eastern Finland.
