| Designed to mark dangerous coastlines, safe entries to harbors and to assist in navigation, the number of operational lighthouses has declined due to the cost to maintain them vs. the ease of use of electronic navigational systems. Thanks to GPS, a ships captain no longer needs to rely on a stone structure emitting light from a system of lamps or lenses. For this photographer though, they sure are pretty to look at. |
