In 55 BC. Roman troops led by Caesar built an important bridge over the Rhine between today`s Koblenz and Andernach. The city of Koblenz was founded in 8 BC, when the Roman commander Drusus established a military camp. In 49, the Romans built a large bridge, the rest of which are still visible today.nAfter the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the city was conquered by the Frankish and became the seat of the city. After the division of the empire of Charlemagne, the city was under the rule of his son Louis I. In 837, the city was under the rule of Charles II. After the signing of the Treaty of Verdun, the city was part of Lorraine, ruled by Lotar I.nIn the 13th century, the city prospered but later the development of the city declined with the beginning of the Thirty Years` War. In 1688 the city was besieged by the French and bombed the old town. In 1794, the town was occupied by French revolutionaries, and after the signing of the Treaty of Lunéville 1801, Koblenz became the capital of the newly formed French department of Rhin-et-Moselle. In 1814 the city was occupied by the Russians. After the Congress of Vienna, the city fell to Prussia.
