The gazometer was designed in 1909 together with the gas plant (which later became the Roman headquarters of Italgas) commissioned by Mayor Ernesto Nathan. The iron structure of the gazometer was assembled by the Genoese company Ansaldo and the German Klonne Dortmund between 1935 and 1937. After decommissioning, the actual gasometer, i.e. the gigantic hollow cylinder that contained the gas, was removed the metal structure that surrounded it remained standing
