| Inaugurated in 1775 and designed by Machado da Castro the monument to King Jose I of Portugal stands in Placa Comercio in Lisbon and is part of the city's rich and public heritage. The king upon his horse is trampling over snakes as a symbol of power, and on the front of the plinth is a plaque to his prime minister, and Marquis de Pombal, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, who was responsible for the rebuild of the city after the disastrous earthquake and tsunami of 1755. |
