John H. Glenn Jr was an American aviator, engineer, astronaut, and United States Senator from Ohio. In 1962 he became the first American to orbit the Earth, circling three times. A moderate Democrat, he served 4 terms in the Senate, from 1975-1989. One of the original Mercury 7 astronauts, he was also, at age 78, in 1999, the oldest person in space as part of the Shuttle program. In 2012 he was presented by Barack Obama with the highest civilian award in the USA, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Glenn died at 95 on December 8, 2016. |
