The jaguar Panthera onca is the only species of the big cats Pantherinae occurring on the American double continent, the smaller puma is assigned to the small cats. An older name for the Jaguar is Ounce, Onze or Onza. This predator looks like the leopard that lives in Africa and Asia and was once common to the southern U.S. states of California, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas. Today the Jaguar is almost only found in Central and South America.
