The Tao are the native people in Lanyu / Orchid island. Living in a small island sorrounded by the Pacific ocean, they had to be completely self-suficient for food. They developed an agricuture based in the cultivation of taro Colocasia esculenta, which became its staple food. Taro is s believed to be one of the earliest cultivated plants. These fields are carefully irrigated and had occupy the narrow flat areas available in this mountainous island, profiting from the fertile volcanic soil.. Lanyu is a very small tropical island of volcanic origin.
