One major source of earning in the Sundarbans is fishing. The rivers and numerous rivulets of the area were once a huge resource of fish and no doubt then that fishing had evolved as a major trade in the Sundarbans. Even now, fishing continues to be a major profession parallel to agriculture although much of it has been exhausted both by human exploitation and natural degradation. The native people have been fishing in the treacherous inlets, creeks, rivulets and rivers of the Sundarbans for generations unending. But till date they are dependent on the very primitive fishing processes, devoid of the facilities of the modern scientific fishing techniques.
