The Historic Rialto Building in the SOMA neighborhood of San Francisco was originally built in 1901, which is what the Roman numerals show on the front of the building, under the name. Although it did sustain at lot of damage from the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906, mainly from the dynamiting for safety reasons, it was able to be rebuilt, in 1910, following the original floor plan. Most of the exterior of the building had survived and was left intact for the new building. The original building was paid for by Herbert Law, a very wealthy businessman who was involved in a lot of construction around the city with his brother. The name Rialto comes from Venice, Italy, where it is an exchange or mart in the commercial center.
