| Pictured are the Historic Ballard Locks at the west end of Salmon Bay in Seattle, Washington`s Lake Washington Ship Canal. The locks prevent salt water intrusion from Puget Sound into Lake Washington and Lake Union. The Ballard Locks carry more boat traffic than any other lock in the United States. The locks formally opened on July 4th, 1917 and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the American Society of Civil Engineers Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks. |
