Porto da Cruz is a small village nested in Madeira’s rugged north coast, at the foot of the impressive coastal promontory named Penha da Aguia, or Eagle’s nest. The historical development of the parish was triggered by the development of sugarcane crops. Nowadays, sugarcane production is much reduced, although the village’s economy and identity remains strongly linked to small-scale agriculture.
