This wide and extravagant parade ground was laid out by architect Albert Schieckedanz for the Hungarian millennium celebrations of 1896, when the country celebrated 1000 years since Arpad and his men occupied the Carpathian Basin. In the centre of the square is a tall Corinthian column topped with a statue of the Archangel Gabriel holding aloft St. Stephen's crown. At the base of Gabriel's column is Arpad himself and the chieftains of the seven Magyar tribes who followed him. Behind the column, in stately semi-circular file, are kings and heroes from Hungarian history.
