The 2,510 km Ganges river rises in the western Himalayas in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is considered holy by Hindus and worshiped as the goddess Ganga in Hinduism. Many former provincial capitals are located on its banks and it support one of the world's highest densities of humans. The average depth of the river is 52 feet (16 m) and the maximum depth is 100 feet (30 m). Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared river Ganges as India’s national river on November 4, 2008.
