Ile Royale - Royal Island - is the largest and westernmost island of the three ÃŽles du Salut - Islands of Salvation - in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of French Guiana. The islands were used as penal colony. The prison opened in 1852 and was closed down in 1953. Such were the cells for convicts in this prison. Some cells didn& x27;t have a window at all. |
