| Fort Preble is located at Spring Point, Portland Harbor, South Portland, Cumberland County, Maine. Built in 1808 in preparation for potential conflict with the Britain or France, who were at war at the time. Continuously used through the U.S. Civil War, the Spanish American War, World War I and World War II; deactivated in 1947. Confederate raiders entered Portland Harbor on June 26,1863, aboard a captured ship, and captured another ship there. 23 Confederates were caught and imprisoned at Fort Preble. |
