Iron ring bolted to shell and mortar wall. Construction began in 1847 on this masonry fort with a pentagon shape and five tower bastions on the northernmost of Florida`s barrier islands to guard the deepwater port of Fernandina. The fort was utilized during the Civil and Spanish American wars but remained inactive, without military value, and in 1935 was sold to the State of Florida and became part of its state park system. The surrounding salt marshland and beaches offer recreation, hiking, camping and bird watching
