This black and white portrait illustrates the face of dementia which is void of recognition and emotion. For loved ones of those stricken with dementia, it is heartbreaking because its a disease that robs memories. This woman has a loving husband, three adult children and two adored grandchildren, yet she does not remember nor acknowledge them. All they can do is show their love for her when they visit. For this woman though, something deep inside is trying to remember -- for she knows there is something missing. She cannot verbalize this but yet, her soul knows. She has a baby doll. She holds it, clutches it and embraces it. She and the baby doll are inseparable and there have been fights over this doll at her nursing home ward. The nurses know that the doll must stay with her. The doll is her memories of something....something that she dedicated her life to, and something that she loved. She is still there, deep down. This image is all about the Alzheimers and Dementia epidemic that is effecting so many today. Its about senior care and the care for the elderly. Its about nursing homes and finding a way to help families with loved ones who are afflicted with these diseases. Hopefully there will be a cure soon. Happy Mother's Day mom.
