The city was inhabited by the Thracian tribe Bessi and scholars still can not give an unambiguous opinion about the name of the city - Eumolpia. In 342 BC. Philip of Macedon conquered the Thracian settlement of Nebet Tepe and renamed it Philippopolis. Today Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
