The ancient Chachapoyas civilization, (warriors of the clouds), had a funeral style unique in the world. The dead were honored by burying the important members in Chullpas,(ancient Andean funerary towers) high on cliffs above the Laguna De Los Condores ( Lake Of The Condors). In 1997 archaeologists discovered the sarcophagi of Karajia with many mummies and artifacts. The museum preserves over 200 mummies and the many artifacts which were not plundered after this exciting discovery. |
