| The Cathedral of Palermo, part of the Arab-Norman itinerary of Palermo, reflects a mixture of different architectural styles that make it unique in its kind.It has undergone many transformations following the succession of different historical phases: originally it was a great temple consecrated to the Virgin Mary then it became a mosque after the Arab conquest and then it was reconverted into a building for Christian worship after the Norman settlement. The most important of the transformations dates back to the 18th century, which endowed the baroque space with a correct neoclassical proportionality in which the dome is the essential element of balance. |
